The NBA.....is it the same or different?

In 1891, Dr. James Naismith invented one of today's most popular sports....Basketball.  Based off of a discussion in my digital civilization class, I began to think about the game of basketball and how just like knowledge (or the means by which we obtain knowledge) is constantly changing, so is the game of basketball.

When basketball first started, the goals were made of wooden baskets with a hole in the bottom.  Today, there are nice breakaway rims that allow one to dunk and hang on the rim.  In the early stages of the game, up until the late 1980's and early 1990's, players played with short shorts versus today's loose, baggy, long shorts.  Another difference comes with the style of the game.  Today's game is played above the rim with each game becoming a players own highlight show versus the old-school fundamental basketball played 30-50 years ago.  I feel that just how mediums of knowledge are either authoritative or constantly changing, so are sports and basketball is continually on the move.

  1. Kurt, nice post. Have you seen the movie Glory Road? I think it is interesting how sports can illustrate our constantly evolving culture. Not only are the styles changing but the players and mindsets as well.
