Technology....what does it do to your family?

What is the first thing you do in the morning?  As a society, we are becoming more and more dependent on technology every day.  Think about it.  Most of us wake up to the alarms on our cell-phones and immediately check to see if we received any texts, e-mails, or missed phone calls while we were sleeping.

Whatever happened to eating breakfast together as a family?  Now, instead of eating breakfast, parents and kids rush to the computer first thing in the morning.  As technological innovation continues to increase, spending time together as a family has taken a back seat.  The effects that technology has on families today are similar to those caused by the industrial revolution.

During the Industrial Revolution, it was not uncommon for each member of the family to go to work each day.  Working long hours each day left little time for each other.  As time together decreased, so did communication.  Everyone was so individual.  Things are no different today.  As parents and kids become consumed in the newest technological advancements, they spend less and less time with each other.  It seems like there is never time to eat together as a family, play games, or do much of anything together.  Everyone is in there own world as the number of hours spent on the Internet, cell-phones, texting, etc. increases.

Karl Gude said the following with respect to communication in his family, “we use texting as an in-house intercom.....I could just walk upstairs, but they (his children) always answer their texts."  Technology, like the industrial revolution, is making the world more individual as family time diminishes.

  1. Technology allows me to text my family to see how they are doing; however, it also allows me to text my family when I'm ten feet away from them, which is ridiculous. Technology really is a blessing and a curse. I don't care what anyone says, it is impossible to live without it these days if someone wants to live a socially normal life. What did we ever do before!?
